Zadid Neme & Jorge Martínez

Born in Colombia, arrived in Canada in 2002

Young lovers, Colombia, 1995.

In the 1990s, a severe economic downturn
caused mass emigration from Colombia.

Zadid and Jorge were among the 1.5 million who left.

In 2002, Zadid and Jorge came to Canada with their young family, just before visa requirements for Latin Americans became more restrictive.

They never imagined how long it would be before they
would see Colombia and their families again.

"It was fighting for almost seven years
in order to be a permanent resident."

Learn more about Zadid & Jorge

Although Zadid works full time in the financial industry,
she is also an artist in her own right.

Today, Jorge is a well-respected tattoo artist who travels widely
to tattoo conventions on several continents.

Art Ink Collective specializes in tattoos, piercings and custom design shirts.

Emboldened by the security of permanent residency, Zadid and Jorge were
finally ready to take the plunge and open their own business in 2010.

For years Jorge gained experience working for others.

Initially self-taught, Jorge was invited to stay with family in Austin, Texas,
where he spent a year apprenticing at a local parlour.

Jorge developed his passion for tattooing while he was a university student
in Colombia. His early “clients” were friends and family.
